Creation Windows

An Introduction

The Creation Windows were designed and made by Gerry Cummins and Jill Stehn and were installed in 2001. Everyone who visits the Cathedral – tourists, locals and visiting Christians – are awed by the world's largest themed stained-glass windows.

There are 24 Creation Windows depicting the story of creation taken from the Book of Genesis.

The interior of the Cathedral is finely proportioned. It has a quiet dignity upheld by the strong vertical brick piers along both sides of the nave. And this dignity and serenity called for grand themes from its stained-glass window.

Contemplating the Peace Window (1995) and looking at the nave, the theme of Creation in Genesis Ch. I & 2 presented itself.
This Creation theme provides the whole space with a sense of unity through a continuous design.

It starts at the front right of the sanctuary, flowing and unfolding around the cathedral while incorporating the Peace Window.
The Cathedral is a liturgical and prayerful space. The first six windows were deliberately designed and painted to be dark, taking their inspiration from Genesis 1/6:8:

‘In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the earth. Now the earth was a formless void, there was darkness over the deep and God's Spirit hovered over the waters’

(Genesis 1/6:8)
