Chrism Mass

This year we will welcome Bishop Tim Norton SVD to preside over our Chrism Mass.

Bishop Tim is an Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Brisbane and will visit Cairns for the specific role of blessing and consecrating the Holy Oils, a Rite that can only be carried out by a bishop.

Every year during Holy Week, the bishop, joined by the priests, deacons and laity of the diocese, gather at the Cathedral for the Chrism Mass. During this Mass, the Oil of the Catechumens and the Oil of the Sick will be blessed and the Oil of Chrism consecrated. These three oils will be used in the administration of sacraments throughout the diocese for the coming year:

  • the Oil of Catechumens - used in the sacrament of Baptism
  • the Oil of the Sick - used in the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick
  • Holy Chrism - used for anointing in the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Orders.

These Holy Oils will then be given to the parishes for use during the year.

During the Mass, the priests renew their commitment to priestly service. Everyone is welcome to attend.
