Saint Mark the Evangelist, often simply referred to as Saint Mark, is traditionally regarded as the author of the Gospel of Mark in the New Testament of the Bible. He is also considered one of the Four Evangelists, along with Matthew, Luke, and John, who wrote the four canonical Gospels.Mark is believed to have been a companion of Saint Peter, one of Jesus Christ's apostles, and to have recorded Peter's accounts of Jesus' life and teachings.
Tradition holds that Mark wrote his Gospel in Rome, likely between AD 65 and 70. Apart from his association with the Gospel, there is limited historical information about Mark's life. According to tradition, he later travelled to Egypt and founded the Church of Alexandria, becoming its first bishop. Mark is also venerated as the patron saint of Venice.
Mark is often depicted with a lion, which is a symbol associated with him, representing his Gospel's emphasis on Jesus as a powerful and majestic figure. His feast day is celebrated on April 25th in the Western Christian tradition and on May 8th in the Eastern Christian tradition.
