St. James the Apostle, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, holds a special place in the hearts of Catholics and Christians around the world. Celebrated annually on July 25th, St. James, also known as Santiago, is a figure whose life and legacy continue to inspire faith, devotion, and pilgrimage.
St. James, often referred to as James the Greater, was the son of Zebedee and Salome, and the brother of John the Apostle. He is one of the first disciples called by Jesus and was known for his fervent zeal and deep faith. The Gospels recount several key events involving St. James:
After his martyrdom, tradition holds that the remains of St. James were transported to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. Today, his tomb is enshrined in the magnificent Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, a major pilgrimage site for Christians known as the Camino de Santiago or the Way of St. James.
The Camino de Santiago is not just a physical journey but a profound spiritual experience. Pilgrims travel from various starting points across Europe to reach the cathedral, following paths that have been trodden for over a thousand years. The most popular route, the Camino Francés, stretches nearly 800 kilometers from St. Jean-Pied-de-Port in France to Santiago de Compostela.
Pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago experience a multitude of spiritual, mental, and physical benefits:
O Glorious Apostle, Saint James, who by reason of your fervent and generous heart was chosen by Jesus to be a witness of His glory on Mount Tabor, and of His agony in Gethsemane; you, whose very name is a symbol of warfare and victory: obtain for us strength and consolation in the unending warfare of this life, that, having constantly and generously followed Jesus, we may be victors in the strife and deserve to receive the victor's crown in heaven. Amen.
St. James is celebrated with grand festivals, especially in Spain. The Feast of St. James, or Día de Santiago, features processions, fireworks, traditional music, and dance.
