On August 10th, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast day of St. Lawrence, a deacon of Rome whose life and martyrdom continue to inspire millions worldwide. St. Lawrence’s legacy is one of unwavering faith, selfless service, and profound courage in the face of persecution.
St. Lawrence was born in AD 225 in Valencia, Spain. He travelled to Rome where he served under Pope Sixtus II. As one of the seven deacons of Rome, Lawrence was responsible for the Church's material goods and the distribution of alms to the poor. His deep commitment to the welfare of the less fortunate and his role as a caretaker of the Church's treasures earned him a revered place in the early Christian community.
During the persecution of Christians under Emperor Valerian in AD 258, Pope Sixtus II was captured and executed. Lawrence, knowing he would be next, began distributing the Church's wealth to the poor to prevent it from being seized by the Roman authorities. When summoned by the prefect of Rome and ordered to surrender the Church's treasures, Lawrence presented the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the suffering, declaring, “These are the treasures of the Church.”
Angered by Lawrence’s defiance, the prefect ordered his execution. According to tradition, Lawrence was martyred by being roasted alive on a gridiron. Even in his final moments, Lawrence’s faith shone brightly; he is famously quoted as saying, “Turn me over, I am done on this side,” a testament to his courage and unwavering spirit.
St. Lawrence's life offers timeless lessons on faith, humility, and resilience. His dedication to serving the needy, even at the cost of his life, challenges us to consider how we can serve others selflessly. In a world often driven by material wealth, Lawrence’s identification of the poor and suffering as the true treasures of the Church is a powerful reminder of where our priorities should lie.
We can draw inspiration from Lawrence’s story in several ways:
In honouring St. Lawrence, let us also seek his intercession through prayer:
