The Secret Benefactor: St. Monica Statue Restoration Brings New Mystery to Cairns Diocese

The statue of St. Monica in St. Monica’s Cathedral, soon to be restored to its former glory by a mysterious artisan.

Cairns, QLD — The Diocese of Cairns is abuzz with excitement and curiosity as a beloved statue of St. Monica, located in St. Monica’s Cathedral, is set to undergo a much-anticipated restoration. The statue, which has stood in quiet reverence for decades, will soon be revitalised, thanks to a mysterious donor and an enigmatic artisan.

The statue of St. Monica, holding a scroll inscribed with the Latin phrase "Tolle, Fili, Lege" ["Take up, my son (St Augustine), and read (his works)"], has been a significant fixture in the cathedral, offering solace and inspiration to countless parishioners. Over the years, the statue has weathered the passage of time, its once-vibrant colors and fine details fading. The restoration promises to return it to its original splendor, capturing the hearts and imaginations of the faithful once more.

In a twist that has sparked intrigue throughout the diocese, the identity of the benefactor funding the restoration remains shrouded in mystery. The only information provided was a note expressing the donor’s deep devotion to St. Monica and a desire to see her likeness renewed for future generations. This act of anonymous generosity has inspired both gratitude and speculation among parishioners.

Adding to the enigma is the artisan chosen for the restoration, whose identity is also being kept under wraps. Known only by reputation, the artisan has a storied history of restoring sacred art with a meticulous hand and an artist’s eye, bringing historical and spiritual significance back to life.

Fr Roy Neervelil speaking on behalf of St Monica's War Memorial Cathedral in the Diocese of Cairns, expressed his enthusiasm: “The restoration of St. Monica’s statue is not just about preserving a piece of art; it’s about renewing our connection to the spiritual heritage and the faith that sustains us. We are profoundly grateful to our anonymous donor and look forward to witnessing the statue’s transformation.”

As the restoration project begins, the community eagerly awaits the unveiling of the rejuvenated statue, speculating on the identity of the mysterious benefactor and the skilled artisan. This restoration serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of faith and the quiet acts of devotion that continue to shape and enrich the Diocese of Cairns.

For those wishing to follow the progress of the restoration or to learn more about the history of the St. Monica statue, updates will be available on the Diocese of Cairns website and social media channels. Stay tuned for the grand reveal of St. Monica in her renewed glory.
