Joe and Anne Serra from Atherton parish volunteer as chaplains visiting Lotus Glen Correctional Centre each Monday.
Prison chaplains are very welcome at the prison but it can take quite a few months to get all the necessary documentation clearances through Correctional Services. Chaplains are the only ones who enter the units unescorted; the men always respect the chaplains because they invariably treat the prisoners themselves with respect. A chaplain's role is to listen to inmates, pray with them and offer them some hope.
The chaplains also offer an ecumenical service on the second Sunday of each month.
