The resignation of Bishop James Foley of the Diocese of Cairns was accepted by the Holy Father Pope Francis on Sunday 21 August 2022, thirty years to the day of his episcopal ordination as Bishop of Cairns.
The Episcopal See of Cairns is now vacant until a new Bishop is appointed. Governance of the diocese during this transitional period will fall to a Diocesan Administrator.
In accordance with the Code of Canon Law, the College of Consultors met on 22 August and elected Rev Fr Kerry Crowley as the Diocesan Administrator. Fr Kerry is the Parish Priest of Innisfail and Parish Administrator of Mourilyan and South Johnstone, as well as Vicar Forane of the Southern Deanery and previously Vicar for Education.
The following roles and appointments cease when a bishop ceases to hold office:
- The Vicar(s) General
- The Episcopal Vicars
- The Council of Priests
- The Diocesan Pastoral Council
All the faithful are asked to pray for Fr Kerry as he begins his new role, and for Bishop James as he transitions into retirement.
