Confirmation and First Eucharist

Are you ready to take the next step in your spiritual journey?

Confirmation is a sacred sacrament of initiation in the Catholic Church that marks a deepening of a person’s faith and commitment to Christian life. Often celebrated around the age of 12 or 13, it is considered a spiritual “coming of age”, where young Catholics take greater responsibility for living out their faith.

In Confirmation, Catholics renew the promises made at Baptism, receive the Holy Spirit in a special way, and are strengthened to live lives of faith, service, and witness. The sacrament involves the laying on of hands and anointing with holy oil by a bishop or priest, outward signs of the inward grace received.

Confirmation is typically celebrated just before or alongside First Holy Communion, completing the process of Christian initiation and affirming one's place in the family of Christ.

Before receiving the sacrament, candidates take part in a preparation program through their parish or school. These sessions help young people understand the meaning of Confirmation, deepen their relationship with God, and learn how to live as active members of the Church.

First Holy Communion is a significant and sacred milestone in the Catholic Church, marking a person’s first reception of the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Also known as the First Eucharist, it is typically celebrated around the age of seven or eight, after a child has received their First Reconciliation.

As the climax of the initiation process, First Holy Communion signifies a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and full participation in the life of the Church. Sharing in the Eucharist for the first time, eating and drinking with the community at the Table of the Lord, is a powerful sign of belonging to the Catholic faith.

In many parishes, Confirmation is celebrated alongside or just before First Holy Communion, marking a complete step into the faith with the support of family and parish community.

Understanding the meaning of First Holy Communion helps us appreciate its profound spiritual importance — not just as a tradition, but as a sacred encounter with Christ at the heart of Catholic life.
