Synod 2025-26

Bishop Joe Caddy has convoked a Diocesan Synod with the theme "A Future Filled with Hope."

Our Synod journey

This Synod will be an opportunity for us to listen to the Holy Spirit and one another as we discern how best to strengthen the pastoral and spiritual life of our diocese in the years ahead.

The 2025-26 Catholic Diocese of Cairns Synod

The timing of this Synod is especially significant as we journey through the Jubilee Year of Hope, a time when the Church invites us to renew our trust in God's promises and commit ourselves more fully to God’s mission.

If you want to learn more about what a synod is, how you can get involved, or just stay in the loop- make sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram for updates, behind-the-scenes moments, and inspiration.

We’ve also created a series of short, fun, and informative videos, perfect for sharing with your community! You’ll find them on our socials or in our YouTube Synod Playlist.

Key Dates

The Diocesan Synod will begin on Pentecost Sunday, June 8, 2025, and conclude on Pentecost Sunday, May 24, 2026. Through prayer, listening, and dialogue, the primary task of this Synod will be to provide guidance on establishing ongoing consultative processes and assisting in the formation of a Diocesan Pastoral Council. Our opening plenary consultation session is Saturday, 14 June 2025. The closing session will be Saturday 16, May 2026.

Plenary Sessions

We began with a plenary session on Saturday, 14 June 2025, open to all members of our diocese, as an opportunity to gather in faith, prayer, and shared discernment. Our second plenary consultation will be on Saturday, 16 May 2026. Tickets will be advertised and available for our 2026 session closer to the date.

Synod Members

Over 70 applications for Synod Membership were received, showing a strong amount of dedication to the future of our Diocese. 55 Synod Members were appointed—comprising clergy, religious, and lay representatives from all over the diocese. A mixture of men and women from ages 18-93. They will meet regularly throughout the year to build upon the work of the plenary session.
