We’re pleased to share a wonderful update from Canberra this week, where newly appointed bishops from across Australia have gathered for the Seminar for New Bishops in a Synodal Way. Hosted by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference and guided by Archbishop Christopher Prowse, the formation program brings together eight new bishops for a week of learning, prayer, reflection, and shared experience.
Among them is our own Bishop Joe, who continues to represent the Cairns region with warmth, humility, and a genuine love for our diverse communities (not to mention his love for fishing). The seminar aimed to support bishops as they navigate the transition into their roles – deepening their understanding of leadership, collaboration, and the pastoral needs of the people they serve.
Bishop Joe shared that the gathering has been especially valuable not just for the content, but for the quality of the encounters. He described the experience as an opportunity for “real connection and engagement,” something he’s found particularly helpful now that he has had time to settle into his ministry after his 2024 ordination.
We’re grateful for Bishop Joe’s continued dedication to our region – from the Torres Strait to Cardwell – and for the hope he carries with him as he serves communities facing unique challenges with compassion and commitment.
