Mourilyan Church Closure

Mourilyan Closure_1024x768px

The Diocese of Cairns can confirm that the church at Mourilyan is being formally closed and decommissioned following a period of careful discernment and consultation.

This decision has been made in response to local pastoral and practical considerations, including changing community needs, the age and ongoing requirements of the building, and the responsible stewardship of diocesan resources. The Catholic community in the area continues to be well served through several active churches located nearby within the Innisfail Parish, ensuring ongoing access to Mass, the sacraments, pastoral care and parish life. The church remains an important part of the region’s Catholic story. For generations, it has been a place of prayer, celebration and community life, with many local families contributing to its history and legacy. The faith, dedication and memories of those who worshipped there will continue to be valued and remembered.

We recognise that this decision may be deeply emotional for those with strong personal and family ties to the church. We honour the many parishioners, clergy, volunteers and families who have cared for and sustained this faith community throughout its history, and we give thanks for the enduring legacy they leave behind.

While the building will no longer operate as a church, the Catholic community remains active and continues to be supported through the wider Innisfail Parish network. The Diocese is committed to accompanying parishioners through this transition with care, compassion and gratitude, while honouring the rich heritage and cherished memories of the Mourilyan Catholic community.
