On Saturday 16 May 2026, the Diocese of Cairns gathered for the Called to Lead diocesan event. It was a significant formation day that brought together more than 150 participants from across the diocese. Held at St Mary’s Catholic College, Woree, the event marked an important moment in the diocese’s shared Synod journey, inviting both clergy and laity to deepen their understanding of leadership in a synodal Church.

Grounded in the spirit of renewal that has shaped the Diocesan Synod, the day offered a rich program of prayer, reflection, and practical formation. Participants were guided by Bishop Joseph Caddy, along with presenters Qwayne Guevara, Gen Bryant, and Fr Josh Whitehead, whose input drew on both local insight and international experience.

Throughout the day, participants explored key themes including creating synodal communities, the importance of accompaniment, and leading parish life from maintenance to mission. Sessions led by Anne Chellingworth and Cathy Spencer also highlighted the work of the Diocesan Pastoral Council and the Parish Visitation Program, reinforcing the importance of collaboration and shared responsibility in the Church’s mission.

There were many opportunities for learning, dialogue, and connection, as participants engaged deeply with the call to form missionary disciples and to strengthen parish communities as places of welcome, faith, and service.

The day concluded with Mass, drawing together the insights and graces of the gathering in prayer and thanksgiving, and sending participants forth renewed in their commitment to serve.

Called to Lead was both an invitation and a response – an opportunity to listen attentively to the Spirit and to step forward with courage and hope. As the Diocese continues its synodal journey, the fruit of this gathering will be carried into the life and mission of communities across Cairns.
