Born in 1949 in the close-knit township of Gordonvale, Ann Davies’ life has been deeply intertwined with St Michael’s Church – a place that has shaped her faith, friendships, and sense of service over many decades.
Ann’s journey began as a student at St Michael’s School, where the foundations of faith and community were laid. Some of her earliest memories are of Saturday mornings spent at the church. Under the careful guidance of Sacristan Jane Roberts, Ann and others would polish the brass, sweep the floors, and lovingly apply o’cedar oil to the communion rail – simple acts that instilled a lifelong respect for the sacred space.
By 1989, Ann continued her quiet dedication by caring for the church altar cloths by washing, starching, and ironing them with great pride. Her connection to St Michael’s deepened further when she joined the church choir, where she continues to lend her voice in praise to this day.
Ann’s service extends far beyond the walls of the church. Each Sunday, she plays a key role in hospitality, warmly welcoming parishioners over tea and conversation, and she supports the monthly morning teas following the Anointing Mass. Her week is filled with acts of kindness: on Mondays she volunteers at the “Pantry,” distributing donated food to those in need; on Tuesdays she carefully packs bread for delivery to St Vincent de Paul.
Her compassion is especially evident on Wednesdays, when she takes Holy Communion to the sick and elderly – bringing not only the Eucharist but also comfort and companionship. She also participates in the parish’s afternoons in the park, offering friendship and a listening ear to those who may feel isolated.
Within the Mass itself, Ann serves as both reader and commentator, helping to guide the congregation in prayer. Beyond this, she quietly supports parishioners in practical ways, including providing transport for those who need assistance getting to Mass and appointments.
Through every decade, Ann Davies has embodied the spirit of faith in action. Her life is a testament to the strength of community, the importance of small acts of service, and the enduring presence of faith in everyday life. As Cairns marks 150 years, Ann’s story stands as a shining example of devotion, generosity, and love.
