Pope Leo XIV: “The Lord is refuge of the poor”

In his message for the 10th World Day of the Poor, to be observed on 15 November 2026, Pope Leo XIV invites the Church to rediscover God as “the refuge of the poor” and to renew its commitment to justice, solidarity and human dignity.

Reflecting on Scripture, the Holy Father highlights the enduring reality of social injustice, noting that the poor often bear the heaviest burden of inequality, exclusion and indifference. He warns that in today’s world, their voices are frequently silenced – sometimes subtly – while digital spaces can amplify division and neglect.

Pope Leo reminds us that the poor, who live with simplicity and rely on what is essential, are often most open to recognising God as their refuge. Yet many today remain unseen and unheard, deprived not only of material needs, but also of dignity and a sense of belonging.

The Holy Father calls on Christians not only to trust in God, but to become a refuge for others – ensuring that those who are marginalised are welcomed, accompanied, and restored in dignity. He encourages communities to reflect on their priorities and to listen to the experiences of the poor, walking alongside them with compassion and humility.

As we prepare for this year’s World Day of the Poor, Pope Leo invites all people of goodwill to open their hearts and communities, so that those seeking hope may truly feel at home in the Church.
